Scaffolding Hire Details

B-MAT Scaffolding was instructed to provide a bridged scaffolding solution in Haringey, North London, where safe access was required to specific work areas above a fragile roof structure. Due to the condition of the roof below, a conventional scaffold bearing directly onto the roof was not suitable.

This project required a carefully engineered solution, drawing on our team’s experience and technical expertise to ensure that all loads were safely transferred away from the fragile roof while still providing a stable and fully compliant working platform.

Project Overview – Access Over a Fragile Roof

The key challenge on this project was the need to gain safe access above roof level without imposing load onto the roof structure beneath. Fragile or lightweight roofs present a significant risk when not correctly managed, and incorrect loading can result in structural failure or collapse.

To address this, B-MAT Scaffolding designed a bridged scaffold system that completely avoided loading the roof, instead transferring weight back into the main structure of the building using specialist fixing methods.

Using Gallows Brackets to Remove Load from the Roof

The solution involved installing gallows brackets securely fixed into the building’s brickwork. These brackets created a cantilevered support system, allowing the scaffold load to be carried by the structural walls rather than the fragile roof surface.

By fixing directly into sound masonry, the gallows brackets provided:

  • A secure and load-bearing fixing point
  • Complete removal of vertical load from the roof below
  • A stable base for supporting bridged scaffold elements

This approach ensured that the integrity of the roof was maintained throughout the works and eliminated the risks associated with bearing scaffold weight on unsuitable surfaces.

Bridging the Roof with Apollo Beams

To span safely across the roof area, B-MAT installed 450mm aluminium Apollo beams, positioned to bridge between the gallows bracket supports. These beams provided a strong, lightweight and dependable means of transferring load back to the fixed supports.

The Apollo beams were selected for their:

  • High load-bearing capacity relative to weight
  • Suitability for bridging applications
  • Compatibility with complex scaffold configurations
  • Proven performance in restricted and fragile-roof scenarios

Once in place, the beams created a solid and reliable platform from which the rest of the scaffold structure could be safely built.

Scaffold Construction from a Secure Fixing Point

With the gallows brackets and Apollo beams fully secured, the scaffold was then built upwards to provide safe access to the required work areas. This allowed operatives to work at height with confidence, knowing that the structure beneath them was stable and correctly supported.

The completed scaffold included:

  • Fully boarded working platforms
  • Double guard rails and toe boards for fall prevention
  • Secure access points for authorised personnel
  • Carefully designed load paths back to the building structure

This engineered approach ensured the scaffold met all safety and usability requirements without placing the roof at risk.

Safety Planning and Risk Management

Due to the complexity of the installation, a detailed site survey, risk assessment and method statement were completed before work commenced. Particular attention was given to load paths, fixing integrity and ensuring all components were installed correctly.

The use of gallows brackets and bridged beams was carefully controlled and checked throughout erection to ensure the scaffold remained safe and compliant at every stage.

PPE and Professional Site Conduct

All B-MAT scaffolders involved in this project operated in full compliance with our Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and safe systems of work.

PPE worn on site included:

  • Hard hats to protect against overhead hazards
  • High-visibility clothing
  • Safety footwear with reinforced toecaps and slip-resistant soles
  • Protective gloves for safe handling of scaffold components

Controlled working practices and clear communication ensured the scaffold was erected efficiently while maintaining a high level of safety at all times.

Experience-Driven Solutions for Complex Access Challenges

This bridged scaffolding project in Haringey highlights the importance of experience, competence and proper planning when dealing with complex access scenarios. Rather than applying a standard solution, B-MAT Scaffolding used specialist equipment and technical knowledge to deliver a safe and effective outcome.

By transferring loads away from the fragile roof and back into the main structure of the building, the scaffold provided secure access without compromising the integrity of the property.

Short / Long Term Scaffolding Hire

When it comes to construction, renovation or property maintenance, having the right scaffolding solution in place is essential for safety, efficiency and compliance. Whether you are a homeowner needing temporary access to your roof for a few weeks, a building contractor overseeing a large commercial development, or a property manager planning long-term works, reliable scaffolding hire makes all the difference.

Scaffold Platforms

Scaffold platforms are an essential part of safe and efficient construction, repair, and maintenance projects across London and Essex. Whether you are working on a residential property in need of external access, a commercial building requiring large-scale scaffolding, or specialist works where stability and safety are critical, having the right scaffold platform in place ensures both productivity and compliance with health and safety standards.

Scaffolding / Access towers

When working at height, safety and stability are vital. That’s why so many homeowners, builders, and contractors rely on scaffolding and access towers for their projects across London and Essex. Whether you’re repairing a roof, painting the exterior of a property, or carrying out commercial maintenance, access towers provide a secure platform that allows work to be completed safely, quickly, and efficiently.

Replacing Fascias / Gutters

Fascias, soffits and gutters are vital parts of any building. They protect your property from water damage, keep your roofline secure, and ensure rainwater is directed away from walls and foundations. Over time, however, fascias and gutters can become damaged, weathered or blocked — leading to leaks, rot, damp and expensive repairs. Replacing fascias and gutters often requires safe access to awkward roof edges and upper storeys. That’s why professional scaffolding hire is essential. Our company provides specialist scaffolding hire for replacing fascias and gutters in London, Essex and Hertfordshire, with flexible short and long term hire options for homeowners, builders and roofing contractors.

House Refurbishment

House refurbishment projects come in all shapes and sizes, from small cosmetic upgrades to full-scale structural renovations. Whether you are modernising an older property, restoring a period home, or simply upgrading your roofline and windows, one thing remains constant: safe access is vital. Professional scaffolding hire ensures that every stage of a refurbishment project can be carried out safely, efficiently and in compliance with regulations.
