Very Technical Designed Scaffold at Wood Green Shopping Centre, North London

B-MAT Scaffolding was appointed to deliver a highly technical, fully designed scaffolding solution at Wood Green Shopping Centre in the London Borough of Haringey. This complex project involved the installation of a splayed scaffold structure along a multi-storey car park ramp, enabling safe access for the exterior of the ramp while maintaining full vehicle movement below.
The scaffold was required to support a public art installation commissioned by the local authority as part of a placemaking initiative. Working in collaboration with the project designer, client representatives, and the appointed artist, Matthew Hodgkin, B-MAT Scaffolding provided a compliant access solution that allowed the installation of the artwork titled “Under Many Flags”.
Due to the unique geometry of the car park ramp and the need to keep traffic flowing in and out of the shopping centre, a standard scaffold arrangement was not suitable. Our team designed and installed a bespoke splayed scaffold system incorporating bridge sections at the base. This ensured that vehicles could safely exit the car park without obstruction while scaffold loads were transferred securely to suitable bearing points.
All aspects of the scaffold were fully designed, calculated, and installed in line with TG21 guidance and current industry best practice. Particular attention was paid to load paths, fixing methods, and edge protection, ensuring the structure remained stable and safe throughout the duration of the works in a busy public environment.
Safety was a key priority on this project. The scaffold included fully boarded working platforms, secure access routes, guardrails, toe boards, and protective measures to safeguard both operatives and members of the public. The installation was carried out by trained and qualified operatives with extensive experience in complex commercial and public-sector scaffolding projects.
Given the high-profile location and continuous use of the shopping centre and car park, careful planning and coordination were essential. B-MAT Scaffolding worked closely with the client and centre management to programme installation and dismantling activities efficiently, minimising disruption while maintaining strict safety standards at all times.
