Access Scaffolding, Staircase & Edge Protection for Solar Installation at The Milton Keynes Academy
Location: Fulwoods drive Milton Keynes Buckinghamshire MK6 5LA
B-MAT Scaffolding was appointed to provide a comprehensive access and edge protection solution to support a solar panel installation project at The Milton Keynes Academy in Leadenhall, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. The project formed part of the academy’s commitment to renewable energy and making effective use of its extensive roof space.
The scope of works required safe and reliable access to roof level for specialist solar installation contractors, along with full perimeter edge protection to ensure operatives could work safely at height across a large roof area. Given the size of the building and the educational setting, careful planning and strict safety controls were essential throughout.
To provide safe and efficient access, B-MAT installed a pre-fabricated 16-metre Layer scaffolding staircase. This staircase system offered a stable, non-slip means of access to the roof, allowing operatives to move tools and materials safely between ground and roof levels without reliance on ladders.
Once roof access was established, edge protection was installed around the full perimeter of the academy roof. This created a secure working environment, allowing installation teams to move freely and carry out solar panel works efficiently while significantly reducing the risk of falls.
All scaffolding, staircase, and edge protection systems were installed in accordance with TG21 guidance and SG4 safe working at height principles. Particular attention was given to safeguarding, access control, and site management to ensure the works were carried out safely within an operational school environment.
B-MAT Scaffolding coordinated closely with the client and installation contractors to programme the works effectively, ensuring access was available exactly when required and maintained in a safe and compliant condition for the duration of the solar installation.
Regular inspections were undertaken to confirm the integrity and stability of the access systems and edge protection throughout the project. Once the solar installation was completed, all scaffolding elements were dismantled promptly and safely in line with the agreed programme.
This project at The Milton Keynes Academy demonstrates B-MAT Scaffolding’s experience in supporting renewable energy installations within educational settings. By combining engineered access solutions with robust edge protection, we enabled the safe delivery of a large-scale solar installation while supporting the academy’s sustainability objectives.
