B-MAT Scaffolding was appointed to provide a birdcage scaffold within an internal stairwell at a UCL (University College London) campus building in Euston, Central London. The scaffold was required to enable safe access for high-level internal works within a confined and sensitive educational environment.
Due to the internal location and restricted access, a birdcage scaffold was selected as the most suitable solution. This configuration provided a stable, freestanding platform spanning the stairwell area, allowing contractors to work safely at height while maintaining full support across the structure.
The scaffold was erected to the required working height, with fully boarded platforms, guardrails, and edge protection installed as standard. The design ensured a secure working environment for operatives while accommodating the constraints of the stairwell layout.
To minimise disruption to the university’s daily operations, all installation works were carried out out of hours. This approach ensured that teaching spaces, access routes, and student movement were not impacted, allowing the building to remain fully operational during normal hours.
All scaffolding was installed by trained and qualified operatives in accordance with TG21 guidance and SG4 safe working at height principles. Particular care was taken during installation to protect the existing building fabric and maintain a clean, well-managed working environment.
The scaffold was inspected on completion and maintained in a safe and compliant condition for the duration of the works. Once the project was completed, the scaffold was dismantled efficiently, again out of hours, ensuring the building was returned to normal use without disruption.
