Our yard is in Nazeing. Lakeside Nursery, Pecks Hill, EN9 2NX, which makes this the one village where the tube, boards, lorry and crew all start from the same postcode. Big plots, lanes and glasshouses
Nazeing is not terraced-street scaffolding. Around Nazeing New Road the growing belt still has working nurseries and glasshouses, where access means driving onto soft ground and founding the scaffold on sole boards or a designed base rather than firm pavement. Towards Bumbles Green, Broadley Common and Middle Street the houses are detached and set well back off narrow lanes, behind hedges and long drives, usually with a conservatory, a single-storey rear extension or an outbuilding in the way. Around Nazeing Common it is the same story: big plots, and roofs that need bridging over something.
Private land, narrow lanes, soft ground
Most Nazeing scaffolds stand entirely on private land, so no highway licence is needed at all. Where one does sit on the lane or the verge, Essex County Council is the highway authority and we make the application. Planning goes to Epping Forest District Council, which matters for barn conversions, outbuildings and Green Belt work. The real problem here is getting in: single-track lanes, overhanging trees and gateways a full-length lorry cannot swing into, so we plan the drop before the day.

Usually, yes, but we check first. Plenty of properties around Broadley Common and Middle Street sit behind narrow gateways or long drives. On the free site visit we work out where the lorry can stand, where the material can be dropped and whether any of it has to be carried in by hand. That gets settled before we quote, not on the day.

Yes. If any part of the scaffold sits on the public highway or footpath, the highway authority has to licence it before it goes up. We handle the application, the drawings and the conditions that come with it — including lighting, hoarding and pedestrian protection where the council asks for them.
