A refurbishment is rarely one trade. The roofer goes first, then the renderer, then the window fitter, then the decorator, and they all want access to the same elevation at different heights. One scaffold has to serve the lot, and it has to be right for each of them in turn.

How we approach house refurbishment scaffolding
One scaffold, several trades
Roofer, renderer, window fitter, decorator: they follow each other up and down the same elevation. We build the scaffold to cover the whole run of work rather than the first trade on site, board it out fully where the façade is being worked, and put the lifts where they are actually needed. It saves striking and re-erecting halfway through.
Period and listed buildings
On a period house you cannot always drill ties into the brickwork, and on a listed building you may not be allowed to at all. We work round it: ties into window reveals with box ties, rakers, buttresses, or a free-standing scaffold where the façade has to stay untouched. The redecoration scaffold to a four-storey Edwardian house in Hampstead is a good example of the sort of building we mean.
Adapting as the job changes
Refurbishments change. The roof turns out worse than it looked, the render goes further round than planned, someone decides the rear elevation needs doing too. We come back and alter the scaffold: extra lifts, an extra elevation, a bridge over the extension, netting or sheeting once the render starts. Every alteration is inspected and handed back before anyone works off it.

Usually, yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. We build for the full scope rather than the first trade, so the same scaffold takes the roofer, the renderer, the window fitter and the decorator in turn. Fully boarded lifts suit façade work, and we adapt or add lifts as each trade needs them.
It gets designed to stand without ties. That means a wider base, rakers, buttresses, kentledge, or box ties into window openings where drilling the façade is not allowed. Period and listed properties come up often on refurbishment work, so we check it on the site visit and design the scaffold to TG20:21 or a bespoke drawing.
