Scaffolding in Hertford, Hertfordshire
We scaffold across Hertford, SG13 and SG14, and the villages around it. Extensions, loft conversions, re-roofs, renovation work and repointing, on everything from a modern semi on the edge of town to a listed house in the town-centre conservation area. We are based at Nazeing, just over the county line, so Hertford is local work for us rather than a trip out. Our scaffolders hold CISRS cards, the company is CHAS assessed and Constructionline Gold registered, and anything that cannot be built straight to TG20:21 gets a proper design. Every scaffold is inspected before it is handed over and then at least every seven days.
Georgian town centre, modern edges
Hertford is the county town, and the centre is protected: a conservation area with a lot of Georgian frontages and older timber-framed buildings around Parliament Square, the castle and the streets running down to the water where the Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram meet. Behind that, the town spreads out into Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing, and newer estates on the hills either side, which is where most extension and re-roof work is. Fordwich Rise is that sort of ground: a residential street where the scaffold goes up in a garden, not on a high street. The two need different approaches.
Two authorities, narrow town-centre lanes
The highway authority here is Hertfordshire County Council, so the pavement licence comes from them, while East Herts District Council handles planning and the conservation area. On a listed building, consent can be needed for the works and sometimes for how the scaffold fixes to the fabric, so we look at tying options early rather than drilling into soft brick or timber. Around the castle and Parliament Square the lanes are narrow and one-way, so we plan the drop and the erect around loading restrictions.

Yes, and it is worth planning it properly. We look at how the scaffold will be tied and supported before anything arrives, so we are not drilling into soft brick, lime mortar or timber where there is another way. Consents for the works themselves go through East Herts District Council, and the footway licence comes from Hertfordshire County Council. We will talk both through on the site visit.

Yes. If any part of the scaffold sits on the public highway or footpath, the highway authority has to licence it before it goes up. We handle the application, the drawings and the conditions that come with it — including lighting, hoarding and pedestrian protection where the council asks for them.
