Scaffolding in Islington, N1

Islington is Georgian and early Victorian terraces, mansion blocks, shop parades and the office fringe of the City, packed into the most densely populated borough in England. We scaffold houses, flats, shops and commercial buildings across N1, N5, N7 and N19: full-height front and rear scaffolds for roofing and redecoration, gantries over the footway, temporary roofs, staircases, and designed scaffolds where a lightwell or a listed front means the standard tables do not apply.

N1, N5, N7, N19  /  North London

We have been going since 2014 and North London is regular work for us. Every scaffolder on site is CISRS-qualified, we hold CHAS and Constructionline Gold, and scaffolds are built to TG20:21 or to an engineer's design, then inspected before first use and at intervals of no more than seven days. Site visits and written quotations are free.

Georgian terraces, basements and no spare ground

Barnsbury, Canonbury and the squares off Liverpool Road run to three and four storeys over a basement, with railings and a front area between the house and the pavement. The scaffold cannot simply stand against the wall: it bridges the lightwell on beams, or it is founded on the footway and tied back, and either way it is often a designed scaffold rather than a tabled one. A great many of those houses are listed. The mansion blocks around Highbury Fields need long runs with the communal entrances working throughout. Islington being as dense as it is, there is almost no off-street ground to stand on, so very nearly every scaffold here involves the public highway.

Islington Council licences, and where TfL takes over

Islington is both the planning and the highway authority for most streets, so the scaffold licence and the parking suspension come from the council and we apply for them. Not every road is theirs, though: stretches of the A1 through Highbury and Holloway are on Transport for London's network, and a scaffold standing on one of those needs TfL's licence instead. We establish which applies before quoting rather than after. Large parts of the borough are conservation areas and many buildings are listed, so ties and fixings are agreed in advance rather than drilled into stock brick or stucco on the day, and parking is controlled borough-wide.

Commercial scaffolding in Islington

Commercial scaffolding here runs from the restaurants and shops along Upper Street and Holloway Road to offices on the City fringe and blocks run by managing agents. Almost all of it is over a public footway that has to stay open, which means gantries, fans, boarded and lit walkways, debris netting, and erecting outside trading hours. Surveyors in Islington usually price a job around several scaffolding companies — ask all of them for drawings, calculations and an inspection regime, not just a number. We provide all three on designed work.

FAQs

Scaffolding in Islington — your questions

Yes. Any scaffold standing on the public highway needs a licence from whoever owns that highway, which is normally Islington Council but is Transport for London where the scaffold sits on the A1. We make the application, carry the insurance they ask for, and the cost appears in the written quotation rather than arriving later. Licences take time to come through, so the earlier you tell us the better. If the scaffold also has to bridge a basement lightwell or tie into a listed front, it will usually be designed, with drawings and calculations supplied.

There is no honest flat rate — the price depends on how many elevations you need, the height, how long the scaffold stays up, and how easy the site is to get to. We come out, look at the job for free, and send a written quotation with the hire period and everything included spelled out. You will not get a number guessed over the phone.

Call us on 020 8050 1296 and we will tell you what we have free that week. We book the free site visit first, then confirm an erection date with the written quote so you can plan your trades around it. Emergency and reactive work is something we do regularly — if a roof has failed or a building needs making safe, say so when you call.

Yes. If any part of the scaffold sits on the public highway or footpath, the highway authority has to licence it before it goes up. We handle the application, the drawings and the conditions that come with it — including lighting, hoarding and pedestrian protection where the council asks for them.
