Timber frame goes up fast. That is the point of it. But the frame crew still needs somewhere to stand, and on most timber frame builds the scaffold is up before the frame arrives on site. We erect it to suit the frame programme, not the other way round.

How we approach timber frame scaffolding
Up before the frame
On a timber frame build the scaffold usually goes up first, or rises alongside the frame as it is erected, because the frame crew works off it. That means we need your erection dates before we quote, not after. We plan the lifts around the panel drops and the crane, so the platform is at the right height when each storey lands.
Standing without ties
You cannot drill ties into a timber frame the way you can into brickwork, and often there is no wall there yet. So the scaffold has to hold itself up. Depending on the site that means a free-standing structure with a wider base, rakers, buttresses, kentledge, or ties taken into the slab or ground. We work that out on the site visit, and where the scaffold falls outside TG20:21 it gets a bespoke design.
Keeping pace, lift by lift
Timber frame moves quickly once it starts. A storey can go up in a day, and a scaffold that is a lift behind holds the whole site up. We come back and add lifts as the frame rises, then adapt again for the roof, the sheathing and the cladding or brick skin. Tell us the programme and we will book the visits in around it.
FAQs
Questions about timber frame scaffolding
Not the way we tie into masonry. Timber frame panels are not built to take tie loads, and early in the build there may be no frame there at all. We use free-standing scaffolds, rakers, buttresses or ties fixed into the slab instead, and design accordingly. The right answer depends on height, ground and how much of the building is up.
Usually before the frame does. The erection crew works off the scaffold, so it needs to be standing and handed over when they arrive. Book the site visit as soon as you have your frame delivery date. We will walk the plot, check ground conditions and access for the wagon, and quote for the full run of lifts.
