Scaffolding in Radlett, WD7
Radlett is a run west round the M25 from our Nazeing yard, in WD7. We scaffold the large detached houses on the roads either side of Watling Street, the flats and offices above its shops, and the extensions, loft conversions, re-roofs and full rebuilds that go on behind the hedges. Someone comes out and looks at the job before we quote.
WD7 / Hertfordshire
B-MAT Scaffolding has been trading since 2014. Every scaffolder we send to Radlett is CISRS-qualified, the company holds CHAS and Constructionline Gold, and each scaffold is inspected before first use and at intervals not exceeding seven days. Site visits and written quotations are free, and there is up to eight weeks of free hire time, subject to terms.
Big houses, sloping plots and Watling Street
Radlett is mostly large detached housing. Roads such as Loom Lane, Newlands Avenue and Gills Hill climb away from Watling Street on both sides of the valley, so plots slope, drives are long, and the scaffold often has to step down a bank or bridge over a garage, an orangery or a basement lightwell. Much of the stock is Edwardian and interwar, with tall stacks and deep eaves, and a good deal of it is being extended upwards or replaced outright, which means a scaffold that goes up in stages with the build. Watling Street is the other kind of job: shops at ground level, flats and offices over them, and a pavement that stays open.
Hertsmere, Hertfordshire Highways and the Green Belt
Two authorities here. Hertfordshire County Council is the highway authority, so a scaffold standing on the footway or the road, which on Watling Street is nearly all of them, needs a licence from the county before it goes up. We make the application and supply the insurance. Planning sits with Hertsmere Borough Council, which matters in the conservation areas along Watling Street and in the Green Belt that wraps the village, where extensions and replacement houses are closely controlled. Most house scaffolds in Radlett stand entirely on private land and need no licence at all. Parking by the station and the shops is tight, so deliveries are booked.
Commercial and industrial scaffolding around Radlett
Commercial scaffolding in Radlett is mostly shopfronts, restaurants and the offices and flats above them on Watling Street, all of which stay in use while we work. Industrial scaffolding is a few miles further on, where the warehouses and trading estates of Borehamwood need roof access, edge protection and towers put up on live sites. Both come with a survey, a method statement and risk assessment, a handover certificate and a weekly inspection record. That paperwork is what separates the scaffolding companies a main contractor can use from the ones it cannot.

Scaffolding in Radlett — your questions
Usually not. Most Radlett houses sit well back from the road, so the scaffold stands on your own drive or garden and no licence is needed. If any part of it stands on the public footway, verge or road, as it nearly always does on Watling Street, it needs a highway licence from Hertfordshire County Council first. We make that application and build to its conditions, and we will tell you which applies at the free site visit.
There is no honest flat rate — the price depends on how many elevations you need, the height, how long the scaffold stays up, and how easy the site is to get to. We come out, look at the job for free, and send a written quotation with the hire period and everything included spelled out. You will not get a number guessed over the phone.
Call us on 020 8050 1296 and we will tell you what we have free that week. We book the free site visit first, then confirm an erection date with the written quote so you can plan your trades around it. Emergency and reactive work is something we do regularly — if a roof has failed or a building needs making safe, say so when you call.
Yes. If any part of the scaffold sits on the public highway or footpath, the highway authority has to licence it before it goes up. We handle the application, the drawings and the conditions that come with it — including lighting, hoarding and pedestrian protection where the council asks for them.
